Recent research into inequalities in Scotland has tended to focus on single factors that drive inequalities rather than taking account of multiple forms of inequality that impact on individuals. Treating different aspects of inequality in isolation is potentially misleading, giving rise to misguided policy interventions and waste of resources.
The findings from the Understanding Inequalities project will have important implications for how we design social policy, foster community cohesion and develop public policies and intervention strategies within a wide range of services, including welfare, health, education and criminal justice.

To achieve our research aims, we will work with a diverse range of stakeholders to ensure our research focuses on the main areas of inequality in Scotland. We will engage proactively with strategic decision-makers to align the research with relevant policy agendas and strategic priorities and we will co-produce the research through dialogue with partner stakeholders and delivering targeted public engagement events aimed at identifying how and why communities experience inequalities.
