This webinar presents findings from a University of Derby project which has tried to explore and understand the long-term effects on crime and contact with the criminal justice system resulting from the changes in the economy and social policies unleashed by the 1980s New Right in Britain – often referred to as ‘Thatcherism’.
In this seminar, we focus on three topics, namely the changes in:
social welfare provisions - which created economic inequalities which resulted in greater contact with the criminal justice system for some,
housing provisions - which resulted in increases in experiences of homelessness, victimisation and contact with the criminal justice system, and
the spatial location of prisons in Britain - which are stronger associated with coal-mining in Britain.
As such, the project highlights the role of politics in both creating and shaping inequalities, and the ways in which inequalities play out over time (during the life-courses of individuals) and over space.
